The Department of Data Science (DS) offers interdisciplinary curricula for undergraduate students. These curricula not only provide a solid foundation in data science and a state-of-the-art spectrum of data science subjects but also offer students the chance to undertake projects and courses connected with promising application areas in data science, such as FinTech, industrial AI, social media analysis, the Internet of Things (IoT), Smart City, Artificial Intelligence and statistical learning approaches.
Fostering intellectual curiosity and autonomy, DS provides students with ample opportunities to participate in open-ended projects and realise their dream data science products. Through its extensive industry partnerships and networks, DS will prepare a new breed of data science professionals to excel in inter-disciplinary and cross-functional collaboration.
What You Will Be Studying
A qualified data scientist or data engineer is trained in a range of computing, mathematics, statistics, and business-oriented topics, gaining a core collection of interdisciplinary skills. The BSc Data Science (BScDS) and BSc Data and Systems Engineering (BScDSE) programme will prepare students to become a data science professional with solid theoretical knowledge and rich practical experience. The programmes will offer students a solid foundation in the following areas.
- Mathematics and computer programming in data science
- Statistical learning, machine learning and deep learning
- Artificial intelligence
- System modelling, simulation and optimisation
Students admitted to the programme will take courses for common first-year studies consisting Gateway Education (GE) courses, Department Requirements and introductory courses. At the end of the first year, students will have a free choice of majors offered by the Department.
Major Options:
Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BScDS)
Data Science DEEP
BSc Data Science cultivates data scientists and data science professionals with rigorous theoretical and methodological knowledge of data science along with in-depth analysis and evaluation for applied problems.
Three flexible modules of advanced knowledge
a) Artificial Intelligence (AI)
b) Social Media Analytics
c) Statistical Learning
Bachelor of Science in Data and Systems Engineering (BScDSE)
Data Science PLUS
BSc Data and Systems Engineering offers an engineering version of data science education. The program provides a full spectrum of knowledge and techniques in applying data science as well as rich on-hand experience of data science projects relating to modern smart and digital societies.
Four flexible categories of advanced knowledge
a) FinTech
b) Industrial AI
c) Smart City
d) Internet of Things (IoT)
Timeline for Major Allocation (for 2023 cohort)
Date | Event |
24 May - 2 June 2024 | Students to indicate the choice of major |
from mid-June 2024 | Students may view the allocated major via the online system |
If student fails to indicate the choice of major before the application deadline, the Department will assign the major to student and the student is not eligible for switching major thereafter.
DS student who is admitted directly to BScDS or BScDSE, and BDDS student who has declared major after Year 1, is NOT eligible for switching major within DS.
