The research of Mr. Ruijia GU, PhD student in the Department of Data Science (DS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), supervised by Prof. Lishuai LI, received the Best Paper Award in the “Environment and Energy Efficiency” Track at the US–Europe Air Transportation Research & Development Symposium 2026, held at Delft University of Technology in June 2026.
Jointly organised by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and EUROCONTROL, the symposium is one of the most established venues in air traffic management research, bringing together leading scholars and emerging researchers from around the world.
The winning paper, entitled “Uncertainty Quantification in Flight Time Prediction for Airline Flight Planning,” was authored by Mr. Ruijia GU, Dr. Chi LI, and Prof. Lishuai LI. The paper develops methods that predict flight times while also quantifying the uncertainty associated with each flight. Such uncertainty-aware estimates can help airlines plan fuel loads more reasonably, supporting reductions in fuel burn and carbon emissions.
DS warmly congratulates Mr. Gu, Dr. Li, and Prof. Li on this outstanding achievement.
