The Department of Data Science (DS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a DS Distinguished Seminar featuring Prof. Lixin TANG, IEEE Fellow, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice President of Northeastern University, China, and Dean of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data at Northeastern University. Prof. Tang delivered a talk on data analytics and optimization for smart industry, sharing his insights into the theoretical foundations and frontier applications of industrial intelligence.
Prof. Tang’s seminar provided an in-depth overview of Data Analytics and Optimization (DAO), highlighting its role as a key foundation for decision-making in smart industry. Inspired by the structure of the human brain, he discussed the fusion theory of data analytics and optimization, as well as DAO-based octopus-topology solutions. The talk covered a wide range of optimization and data analytics methods, including integer optimization, intelligent optimization, convex and sparse optimization, topology and dynamic optimization, reinforcement learning, evolutionary learning, statistical physics-based learning, and information theory-based learning.
Prof. Tang also explored the application of DAO theory within the H-VSEM pattern, which connects frontier technologies with frontier sciences. His research focuses on industrial intelligence and systems optimization theories and methods, with extensive applications in steel manufacturing, equipment and chip manufacturing, logistics, energy, and information industries. He has published 167 papers in leading international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and INFORMS Journal on Computing. His paper published in IISE Transactions received the 2017 Best Applications Paper Award.
DS thanks Prof. Tang for his visit and for the engaging interaction with our faculty and students.
